Trauma Informed Care

Trauma Informed Care is a current term which is widely used by those who provide social services. For this reason, the complexity of what is required to understand the varied response to trauma and to provide care to those who have experienced different kinds of trauma, is often minimised. The training we have undertaken, delivered by the Child Trauma Academy, is designed to prepare trainees to teach others about the complexities of trauma informed care through the provision of information in a systematic, clear, and applicable way. You will find a description of what we offer in the area of trauma informed care under the “Presentations and Workshops” heading.

Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics

The Neuro-sequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) was developed by Bruce Perry M. D., founder of the Child Trauma Academy based in the United States. An aspect of NMT is what Dr Perry calls the “brain map.” It is an assessment tool which is based on a clinical reconstruction of the experience of the infant/toddler/child, utilising all biographical information gathered, including relational history. The basic premise of NMT is that all development is sequential. The approach is designed to assist the practitioner in determining the functional and developmental presentation of a child through the use of a metric that produces a brain map of the child, thereby ensuring the interventions are targeted at the appropriate level to meet the needs of the child in all developmental domains.

Since completing Level II training through the Child Trauma Academy, we have been sought out by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Development, preschools, primary schools and various agencies serving children and their families to employ the Neuro-sequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) approach, which includes the metric (brain map) and detailed recommendations for the individual child, the family and the educational environment. The metric (brain map), which is based on a clinical reconstruction of the experiences of the child from conception onward, and the recommendations allow those working with the child and the family to adapt their plan to the developmental and functional age of the unique child. The recommendations are grounded in an understanding of the effects of trauma on the developing brain, the ways the experience of trauma manifests in a particular child and the interventions which will ameliorate the stress response in the child. The specificity of the brain map and recommendations help those involved with the child on a daily basis to make each hour a therapeutic hour. In this way, the NMT approach assists in the creation of a therapeutic web around each child.
